What We're Looking For

We are looking for a senior, technically fluent Project Manager with hands-on experience managing IBM i / AS400 environments and development teams. This person will own the full project lifecycle for modernization and development initiatives, coordinate between technical teams and business stakeholders, and make sure projects land on time, in scope, and to spec. The ideal candidate has spent real time around AS400 systems, understands the constraints and opportunities of that environment, and can speak credibly with both RPG developers and business sponsors.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the full project lifecycle from initiation to closure for IBM i / AS400 modernization and development projects, keeping timelines, scope, and budget on track.
Coordinate with development teams working in RPG, CL, and modern IBM i tooling to track progress, clear roadblocks, and run sprint planning and retrospectives.
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and internal stakeholders, delivering status updates, gathering requirements, and managing expectations.
Monitor project health through metrics and status reporting, and maintain clear, current documentation throughout each engagement.
Work closely with technical leads and architects to keep deliverables aligned with both the legacy system's constraints and the client's modernization goals.
Translate technical realities of the AS400 environment (legacy code, system dependencies, migration risk) into terms business stakeholders can act on.

Must-Have Skills

5+ years of hands-on experience with IBM i / AS400 systems (as a PM, technical lead, analyst, or developer transitioning into PM work).
5+ years of experience in Project Management within technical or software environments.
Solid understanding of software development processes and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
Based in the United States.
Strong communication skills, comfortable managing both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to manage multiple projects or workstreams simultaneously.
Experience with project management tooling (Jira, Trello, Asana, Confluence, or similar).

Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience with IBM i modernization projects (screen modernization, API enablement, code conversion, or similar).
Familiarity with RPG, CL, or DB2 for i.
Experience working with distributed or international development teams.
Background in enterprise-level systems beyond IBM i.

Ideal Profile

Technically credible with AS400/legacy systems, not just familiar with the term.
Comfortable being the translator between "this is how the mainframe works" and "here's what the business needs to hear."
Detail-oriented, organized, and calm when a legacy migration hits an unexpected wall.
Strong follow-through, able to keep a project moving without needing to be chased.
Adaptable, used to fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous project environments.
